The article is asking for what is meant in the New Testament by the "truth" of the gospel and the "unity" of the church and how the relationship of these two entities is defined. in order to answer these questions the Corpus Paulinum, including the Deuteropauline writings is analyzed (I.) as well as the Corpus Johanneum (II.). Finally, the most important results are concentrated and some consequences are specified with respect to the current situation in theology and church (III). The article shows that there is in fact a deep consensus between the Corpus Paulinum and the Corpus Johanneum in the understanding of "truth" and "unity" in both cases the understanding of "truth" is understood christologically (within the meaning of the exclusive "solus Christus"), and in both cases the unity of the church is constituted and guaranteed by the truth of the gospel. In conclusion, the result of the exegesis has a specific significance for the oecumenical dialogue of the churches the truth question cannot be subordinated to the ambition for a visible unity of the church.
