The historiography of dogma emerged as a discipline of German Protestant theology during the last decade of the 18th century. The Marburg theologianWilhelm Münscher wrote the first comprehensive work. Taking up arguments ofWalch, Ernesti and Semler, Münscher criticized dogmatical theology, above all Kant and theological Kantianism, for their ahistorical approach to the history of doctrine. Münscher, himself a historical relativist, developed the modern concept of research (Forschung). Thus, his handbook opened the way for the historiography of dogma of 19th-century Protestant theology.
