Martin Luther interpreted the Epistle to the Romans in 1515/16 to his students in Wittenberg. Thinking about Rom 1:17 he learnt that God's Justice means his gracious gift by which a new life is opened for all who trust in his word. This understanding became relevant for the interpretation of the whole letter, but also for all books of the Holy Scripture. Luther's understanding which he developed in later writings is sometimes critized also in NT exegesis. But it is still important for a careful reading of the Epistle to the Romans.
