Seelsorge und Streit Johann Gerhard Bibliothek als Spiegel seines theologischen Selbstverständnisses
Buch

Joann Gerhard (1582-1637), one of the most influential Lutheran theologiansof the 17th century, loved books. In his enormous library one can find a great number of both devotional and polemic tracts. This combination of controversial and pastoral writings mirrors Gerhad´s theological identity. The close connection between dogmatics and pastoral care which was typical for early 17th-century Lutheran theologians is evident in Gerhard´s devotional writings. Defending the pure Lutheran doctrine, Gerhard followedJesus´ command to defend his flock against the wolves (John 10). Since ist was a Luthern core belief that any real comfort is only possible on the basis of a pure doctrine, confessional polemics served pastoral work. For this reason pastoral and controversial theology were closley connected witheach other in early modern times. Not only Gerhard´s work but also his library illustrate this close connection. Strangely enough, Gerhard also recommended Calvinistic writings in order to defend the Lutheran doctrine against antitrinitarian "wolves".
