Martin Luther intends to understand God as well as man on the basis of the concept of faith, and he speaks on the one hand of faith of Christians, on the other hand of faith of unbelievers. Is, therefore, his use of the term faith equivocal or unequivocal? The development of his theology leads him to a clear distinction between faith and mere appearance of faith. For him,faith is the basic relation between man and God, not a human ability.
