Vorkantianische Hermeneutik

After the Reformation and as a consequence of its new principles for the interpretation of the Bible, questions of hermeneutics were dealt with thoroughly under new conditions. The first of the extensive works in this field was Matthias Flacius' well-known Clavis Scripturae sacrae of 1567. Itwas followed in the period of Lutheran Orthodoxy by many hermeneutical works of great importance, those by John Gerhard, Wolfgang Franz and Salomon Glassius among others. Their contributions are not only of a historical and antiquarian interest but can be seen as a useful developmentof the biblical theology of the Reformation. During the last two hundred years they have mostly been overlooked or wholly forgotten. New ideas, under the influence of Kantian philosophy and Schleiermacher's doctrine of hermeneutics, have taken their place. This has resulted in the loss of a significant and valuable approach to biblical studies
