Tom and Iris watch the enemy aircraft coming down towards the tree and make up their minds to go hunting for souvenirs. But they find more than they had bargained for: the injured pilot, tangled in the tree by his parachute. And then the air-raid warnings sound and they all have to take shelter. While the two English children and the teenage German pilot are confined together, with the bombs falling around them, Tom and Iris listen to Martin's story. They come to realize that the real casualties of war are not only the soldiers, sailors, and airmen, but the old, the sick, the women, and the children - and that bombs don't care what side you are on.
