Karana and her peaole live happily on their small island in the Pacific Ocean. Then one day dangerous hunters arrive from over the sea. The islanders make an agreement with the hunters, but the hunters break it, with terrible results. Twelve-year-old Karana find herself alone on the island with only birds and animals around her.
