The word 'diaconia' signifies an interpretative perspective on an otherwise general phenomenon of social care: a) relation to the church, b) Christian motivation and c) a theological concept. a) A fruitful relationship between diaconia and church consists in a differentiation in the shared Christian task. b) The situation of professionalized social state care organizations and pluralized religion has led to major changes in the public forms of diaconia. c) However, still a theological concept makes a difference. It points to functions of a Christian background in such organisations: keeping a Christian tradition in mind is helpful in upholding the quality of sensitivity for ethics and religion as an integral part of professional work in social care organisations.
