"Die letzte Chance" Heinrich Vogels Beitrag zur Entstehung des 'Wortes zur Judenfrage' der EKD-Synode in Berlin-Weißensee 1950

The declaration of the 1950 Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany contains theological insights that have proven of prime importance for a new orientation of the mutual relationship between Jews and Christians afterWWII. Because the declaration originally was no agenda item, the history of its development during the synod needs to be analyzed. First, this article reveals the importance that the synod ascribed to a public address on the guilt towards the Jewish People. Second, it highlights the crucial role of Heinrich Vogel for the proposal and designation of this declaration as well as for the wording of single sentences. The basic ideas regarding a Christian theology of Israel can already be found in his christological and ecclesiological writings from the 1930s and 1940s. Nevertheless some further research on the development of this synodical declaration is still warranted.
