Diaconal-Social Learning as educational concept and practise is relatively widespread in German in public and private schools and in some church bound activities. It aims at an increasing social responsibility of students, especially between 14 and 18 years, by means of a accompanied and reflected practical time of work in social service activities, together with lessons and discussions in school. In many respects, it resembles the American concepts of Service Learning or Situated Learning, but it focuses more on the values implied in the social engagement. The three contributions of this section show the foundations, experiences and actual developments of this enterprise as well as examples of its realisation with two age groups, one of 15/16 years (10th class) in a project of two weeks in social service institutions and one of 17/18 years in an interdisciplinary course of Religious and Civil (Political) education in the course system of the grammar school (= brit. A Level).
