Neuer Atheismus

New Atheism can be explained as a reaction to the perceived resurgence of religion, or better, the new strengthening of religion in the public sphere. The ideological basis of New Atheism is a materialistic worldview, often popularly called naturalism. Independent of New Atheism there are different varieties of naturalistic thinking. In the case of New Atheism, a worldview that claims to be founded on science is proposed, yet in fact it is a closed system of thought which does not tolerate being called into question. In addition, New Atheism is an ideology with a tendency to contest the fundamental right to freedom of religion. Alongside this aggressive new form of atheism, which has established itself as an ideological movement and draws attention to its cause through media campaigns, there exists of course a much profounder, thoughtful atheism in the Nietzschean tradition. This form of atheism should be taken seriously in its questioning of theological certainties.
