From an understanding of apologia as a dialogue across borders to make a position plausible to non-insiders, the apologia of the sermon by the famous enlightenment theologian Johann Joachim Spalding (1714 -1804) is presented. He especially pondered the question of the benefit of the sermon. A contemporary apologia of the sermon can be found in Reiner Preul's plea for the "up-to-dateness of the sermon". Common as well distinguishing instructive features in the two examples of an apologia of the sermon are shown. Thus, the awareness of the chances, pitfalls and limits of apologia is increased.
