Against the background of pressing fears about the end of the world, the cultural atmosphere in which the relationship between humankind, God, and nature is perceived has changed. This article reflects on this change by focusing on the distinction between spirituality and piety. 'Creation piety' can be understood as man's gratitude towards his Creator, whereas 'creation spirituality' can be defined as man's "cosmic humility" (J. Moltmann), by which he subordinates himself to nature in the larger scheme of things. The ethical charge with regard to 'creation spirituality' is striking. Does this shift indicate a connection with the fear of tipping points in the climate crisis? Does the hope articulated by the 'old creation piety' still have something to contribute facing the fear of the 'new creation spirituality'?
