The combination of empirical observations of contemporary lived religion and theoretical reflections was already part of the working methods of religious studies in the decades around the turn of the 20th century. In the German-speaking discourse, Heinrich Hackmann (1864-1935), a member of the Göttingen "Religionsgeschichtliche Schule", worked in this exemplary way and could therefore be considered as a Forerunner of today's religious studies. After his first empirical observations of Chinese Buddhism, he redefined the life of a religion as an object of religious research as early as 1899 and named the methodological approach to this. His subsequent longterm, multifaceted observations of practical life in Buddhist monasticism led him to present a postulate for non-judgemental religious research in 1920. Hackmann is thus very close to contemporary approaches to religious studies.
