While most Protestant scholars praise the Protestant contribution to higher learning and the humanities, my essay demonstrates, by contrast, how the disciples of Luther and Melanchthon, as they initiated reforms in schools and universities, time and again were confronted with obstacles and how these obstacles prevented them from fulfilling, at least partially, the promise of the Protestants as a uniquely learned people.
