There is a continuous tension in funeral sermons between giving an eulogy honoring the deceased and proclaiming resurrection of Christ as a contradiction to human possibilities. From an analysis of the theological and rhetorical aspects involved, the author reconstructs closeness vs. distance in communication as the two ideals funeral sermons try to follow. Criteria are given for combining an attunement to consoling elements of faith with biblical objections to empty promises, and thus delivering a sermon in a mode of tentative assurance by providing fitting images.
