In the anthropological reflections of 1 Peter, the concept of the "soul" has a key position. Without comprising the - alleged - opposition of "Jewish" versus "Greek" anthropology, the term is part of the letter's soteriological concept of a "new creation" which does not focus on ontological statements about man and his perfectibility but rather reflects the fundamental corruptibility of human beings. This supports the letter's core intention to make Christian teaching and practice communicable within the Hellenistic-Roman society.
