Die Suche nach Anerkennung - und die Religion
Zeitschriftenartikel

This contribution first discusses the question of why and to which extent the search for recognition determines the late modern way of life. It develops a notion of recognition that does not only relate to willing appreciation, but also to criticism and negation. In a second part, it analyses the relationship between religion and recognition. Based on considerations of creation and justification theology, it emphasizes on the one hand the experience of self-acceptance, weakness and fragmentariness while striving to overcome common modern interpretations of the theory of justification with emphasis on the reciprocity (not symmetry!) of recognition between God and humans. The essay concludes with practical-theological perspectives on resulting challenges for homiletics, but also on the aesthetic and ritual as well as social aspects of the communication of recognition.
