In Germany, churchliness has institutional traits and is intensely interwoven with traditional elements and lasting values. Yet this profile is less and less supported by the changing social framework. Churchliness stands for a demarcated set of approaches to life and lifestyles that many people no longer connect to existentially. The relationship of family and church exemplifies this: Church communication goes along with a habitus that excludes many families right from the start. Against this background, a view on religious positions and practices beyond ecclesiastical affiliation can be of some interest, as they show points of departure that can easily be overlooked when perceived in conventional terms and categories. The challenge is to correlate these forms of religious communication with the communication of the Gospel.
