Today, familiarity with the traditional practices inside church buildings has declined. Protestant theology has become aware that they are more than merely places for the purposes of Sunday church services. The developments in the period of communist East Germany show how churches first were politically defined as mere places for strictly religious practices that had not yet completely died out, but then developed into spaces of deviation, crisis and compensation for what was missing in society.
