Based on three possible interpretations of Justin's dialogue with Trypho, the contribution presents the thesis of the "Partings of the Ways" (James D. G. Dunn) and the separation processes (Bernd Wander) between Jews and Christians. It distinguishes this approach from older models of detachment and outdoing. The article further examines the possible influence of Roman religious policy, more precisely of a reform of the fiscus Iudaicus under Nerva, on the formation of Christianity independently from Judaism. Finally, observations from Christian and Judaistic research are compiled, which contradict the thesis of a separation in only two clearly distinguishable religions before the 4th century AD, and these observations finally result in hermeneutical reflections.
