John Locke suggested that the identity of a human person is constituted by his or her self-consciousness. He understands this identity as the basis for a concept of ethical responsibility. The article discusses if his concept of a diachron-synchron identity can be supplemented by a theological concept of identity. It uses the doctrine of justification for this, as justification means that a human being is not identical with his or her deads. Then it unfolds this doctrine in conversation with Sören Kierkegaard's understanding of identity and non-identity in "Sickness unto Death".
