This study deals with "orthodoxy" as one of the most contested categories in the historiography of early modern Protestantism. Since theological historicism, much research has been done to emphasize the plurality and complexity of the phenomena summed up as Lutheran or Reformed "orthodoxy". Thus, the narrative of a somehow contentious, bookish, impious or even 'dead' "orthodoxy" has been deconstructed and replaced by far more appropriate conclusions. The historiographical category "orthodoxy" has nonetheless been retained even though it originally emerged as a pejorative concept and now substantively contradicts the concerns of most scholars studying the material. Therefore, this study asks and argues for a history of concepts that considers the origins, development, and programmatic use of "orthodoxy" as a historiographical category to reassess its legitimacy for present-day research.
