This essay focusses on Emperor Wilhelm II.'s use of religious ad confessional history for political purposes. His belief in his divinely sanctioned mission and that of his dynasty are discussed. The author also examines Wilhelm's attempts to appropriate the Reformation and the Crusades for political ends. These themes are illustrated using the examples of the consecration of the castle church in Wittenberg in 1892, the Kaiser's journey to the Near East in 1898 and the "Marienburgfest" of1902.
