The paper investigates the question, in what way Kierkegaard can be considered to be a Lutheran theologian. Drawing on confined passages of Kierkegaard's "For Self-Examination" the precise relationship between faith and works, faith and action is examined. Kierkegaard explicitly and positively refers to those distinctions by Luther. However, Kierkegaard recognizes a different "polemical situation" compared to Luther's time and taking this into considerations he has to place his emphasis differently than Luther did. For him a simple recitation of Luther would lead to misunderstandings. Kierkegaard turns out to be a Lutheran theologian exactly by carrying out reformulations necessary for his time.
