Starting with an enquiry into the theories of secularisation and religious individualisation, this essay analyses the differences and connectedness between individual religiosity and church affiliation on the basis of the 5th survey of the EKD (Evangelical Church in Germany) on church membership. Church membership and church attendance are counted as indicators of church affiliation. Religiousness is assessed in terms of individual prayer, belief in God and a higher power, the experience of contact with God or a spiritual power, mystical experience of being one with the universe, astrology, faith in the influence of crystals and stones, communication about religious topics and the meaning of life, and the rather vague question whether one is a seeker of religious meaning. The essay concludes that church affiliation strongly correlates with religiousness, but both are not identical.
