In the article, this institution of Christian help through well trained lay volunteers is taken as an impulse for conceptualizing pastoral care. Working from a definition of the essence of pastoral care and reducing it to a task of parish clergy will lead to understanding certain practices like this Christian hotline as a mere deviation from the ideal.
