Der erste Weltkrieg, besonders die russische Revolution und das Landeskonzil der Orthodoxen Kirche in Russland 1917/18, markieren für Russland, aber auch für Mittelosteuropa, eine Epochenwende. Das Landeskonzil reagiert auf das atheistische sowjetische System (Dekret über die Trennung der Kirche vom Staat ..., Januar 1918) mit der Aktivierung des Gemeindelebens (neue Gemeindeordnung) und der Wiedererrichtung des Patriarchats. Das Trennungsdekret überfordert die Kirche, nicht weil es die Privilegierten der Kirche abschafft, sondern weil es den Verkuendigungsauftrag der Kirche tangiert, und den Staat und die Gesellschaft, weil es den Staat zur Kontrolle der Kirche und die Gesellschaft zu säkularen Riten und Sinndeutungen nötigt.
The First World War, and in particular the Russian Revolution and the All-Russian Sobor (Council) held by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1917/1918, marked a new epoch for Russia and for Eastern Central Europe. The All-Russian Council reacted to the atheistic Soviet system and to the Decree on the Separation of Church and State, which was issued on January 21, 1918, by activating parish life through the introduction of new parish regulations and by restoring patriarchy. The Decree on Separation made excessive demands on the church, not because it abolished the privileges enjoyed by the church, but because it affected the church's mission. It also forced the government into supervising the church, a task it could hardly fulfil, and forced society into adopting secular rituals and interpretations.
