The article contains a critical discussion of central ideas and arguments made public by the protagonists of the (post 9/11-)movement called New Atheism. Considered, in particular, is the severe polemic of the authors against any form of religion - a polemic that has received increasing attention from all over the world during the last couple of years. Six authors and their pertinent publications are selected for closer examination: Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Hams, Christopher Hitchens, Victor Stenger and Lewis Wolpert. Drawing on both genetically, epistemically and ethically fundamental elements of the atheist doctrine the metacritical analysis leads to the double conclusion that: (a) most of the antireligious arguments are either outdated and/or found wanting (b) central tenets of naturalism (the metaphysical fundament, on which most atheistic counter-arguments against religion openly or tacitly rest) are highly dubious.
