In Faust II Goethe presents a surprising critique of early technical projects, such as reclaiming land from the sea. He deliberately puts this as a repeat of history and refers to the biblical story (I Kings 21) about King Ahab who used lethal means to gain land and is criticized for his abuse of power by the prophet Elijah. Today, theatre productions of Faust II, unfortunately, mostly miss these kinds of intertextualities in Goethe's famous work.
