The concept of the soul only plays a marginal role in the highly functional scientific discourse of modernity, including theology and pastoral care theory. At the same time, the idea of emotional and mental satisfaction relates strongly to the concept of the soul and therein plays an important role in the everyday life of many people. How can the concept of the soul be defined from a theological perspective in order to be fruitful for theology and the church, as well as for the shaping of modernity? According to the 19th- and 20th-century religious studies scholar K. von Stuckrad's discourse on the soul, there are four discourse fields of the soul that can be reconstructed: The body-soul relation, the human-nature relation, the relation between individuals and collectives, and the relation between immanence and transcendence. These four approaches are related to F. D. E. Schleiermacher's lectures on psychology (1830), inspiring ideas for contemporary discourses on the soul as well as for the theory and practice of pastoral care.
