The biblical exegesis of Hans Joachim Iwand (1899-1960) deliberately focusses on the question of the present relevance of biblical texts; hence it aims at the interface of scholarly exegesis and churchly preaching. Still relevant today, it needs clarification at the particular interface. In his exegetical oeuvre, Iwand appears as a firm proponent of the theology of the Word of God who develops his view of the church in his examination of biblical texts. This ecclesiology, which is substantially informed by Luther, is exemplified based on his homiletic meditations ("Predigtmeditationen") on Matt 16:13-20. The church evolves out of the constant encounter with God's revelation in Jesus Christ. It hence lives through its "encounter with the Word". Iwand's homiletic meditations are the concrete expression of the search for this encounter connecting theological work and churchly preaching.
