The article first reviews the development of translation theories and studies since Eugene A. Nidadocusing on the discussion around the concept of equivalence the Skopos-theory and the functionalist approach. It then explores consequences of these theories for the translation of the Bible. It is argued that Bible translation always has to cope with die challenge of a double loyalty to both the original text and to the recipients in die target language and culture. In the last part current German Bible translations are assessed and compared in the light of according to different criteria. Special attention is given to the new and much disputed translation Bibel in gerechter Sprache.
