Im Zusammenhang mit der Debatte hinsichtlich der Bedeutung des historischen Episkopats im Rahmen der Meissen Erklärung verfolgt dieser Aufsatz die Entwicklung des anglikanischen Verständnisses des Bischofsamtes zur Reformationszeit. Anhand der Theologie Richard Hookers und John Whitgifts zeigt der Autor auf, dass die Erhebung des Bischofsamtes zur Notwendigkeit durch Pusey und die Oxford-Bewegung eine historische Neuerung darstellt. Der Aufsatz entwickelt ein alternatives Modell des Bischofsamtes, das Raum für weitergehende oekumenische Aussoehnung schafft.
In the context of the unresolved issue of the role of the historic episcopate between the EKD and the Church of England in the Meissen Agreement, this paper traces the growth of the Anglican understanding of episcopacy in the political circumstances of the Reformation. By looking closely at the theology of Richard Hooker and John Whitgift, the author shows that the elevation of episcopacy into a matter of necessity by Pusey and the Oxford Movement is an innovation. An alternative model of episcopacy is developed which allows for the possibility of greater ecumenical reconciliation.
