Neu Can the Triune God himself be changed?
Zeitschriftenartikel

This essay discusses two arguments for the claim that the novelty for God that occurs in his history with people implies that He himself, his personal identity, can be changed: first, God's personal identity can be changed because his personal relations with people change; second, God's personal identity can be changed because God performs creative and renewing actions. First, it is shown that it is implausible to assume that personal identity is completely constituted by personal relations. Next, it is argued that God cannot be said to realize himself by renewing acts because in these acts he maintains his name and because He is the Most High who cannot become more himself than He already is. God's creation and outpouring of his Spirit can be understood as an "enrichment" of his life, and the death and resurrection of his Son as a "disruption" in his life, but not as the corning to life of a new God of love.
