Neu Das Alte Testament und die Ökumene der christlichen Liturgiefamilien
Zeitschriftenartikel

The pluralism of the Christian liturgical families is still characterized, on the one hand, by the coexistence of Priestly and Deuteronomic theology in the Torah and, on the other, by the contrast which shaped Old Testament cultic history between emotional outbreaks and the carefully structured order which has prevailed. Just as the canon presents the Priestly and Deuteronomic concepts of the cult next to one another without further commentary, the contemporary ecumenical community cannot aim to eliminate differences by creating a homogenized liturgy and an uniform liturgical theology. On the contrary, it seems more appropriate to me that we initiate mutual learning processes which make it possible to agree about where defects and distortions exist within individual traditions and how these might be remedied. With their regress to the enthusiastic forms of the Old Testament cultic history, the American Methodists (and in their wake the Pentecostal movement) have enriched the ecumenical situation. The critical potential of enthusiastic forms of worship from the Bible lies not only in the way they call into question well-rehearsed forms of worship, but also in their comprehensive critique of the societal structures lurking behind these forms of worship.
