In the current debate of the fundamentals in applied ethics, the question of what intuitions are becomes of increasing importance. In this essay, neurobiological and ethological facts are used to outline a new answer to this question. Intuitions are proposed to be the output of old ventral structures of the human brain (mainly brainstem and limbic system). Using reflective equilibrium as a conceptual framework, it will be shown, that this proposal is not a relapse to intuitionism but will lead to an elegant and convincing interpretation of the role of intuitions in moral judgement.
