The conversation with Michael Welker in this article revolves around the old theme of "natural theology". The topic he dealt with in his Gifford Lectures. In order not to get caught up in the unresolved problems of the early 20th century, he separated himself from the ontological framework of this tradition along the lines of Bonhoeffer. The "image of God" no longer has anything to do with an empirically demonstrable habitus, but aims at the missionary destiny of the human being, which was understood as "God's response". "Natural theology" - according to the central thesis - is the event of the Spirit in which God himself steps out of himself into the temporal presence of our world. In this way, as a "multimodal" spirit, speaking in several languages and media, he opens himself to the issues of justice, freedom and truth that are so controversial today.
