The Bible does not offer instructions, how to "derive" judgements on bioethical problems from statements in the Bible. Nevertheless, the so called formula of mercy in Ps 103,8 hints to a trace, which may help to realize, how in the Old Testament the perceptions of God, man and reality are linked to each other. The formula of mercy is equally key for understanding the message of the New Testament. It opens a perspective of what can be called the "realism of mercy". As a consequence, contributing to the discussion on bioethics, this paper pleads for understanding human life as a gift and for the unconditional protection of human life, against the idea of using human embryos for research purposes.
