Der Kommunitarismus ist in der pädagogischen Diskussion bislang wenig rezipiert worden. Das hängt im deutschen Sprachraum mit der wirkungsvollen These von F. Tönnies zusammen, wonach "Gesellschaft" eine Verfallsform von "Gemeinschaft" ist, was den zeitgenössischen Rekurs auf community entscheidend erschwert. In diesem Aufsatz wird der Kommunitarismus zunächst als amerikanisches Phänomen am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts verstanden, dessen Wurzeln im 17. und vor allem in der amerikanischen Gründungszeit des 18. Jahrhunderts liegen. Die Rekonstruktion dieser Anfänge verweist auf einen zentralen Konflikt, der auch in der Frontstellung zweier politischer Sprachen zum Ausdruck kommt: der republikanischen und der naturrechtlichen (später: liberalen). Entscheidend ist, dass trotz der mit der amerikanischen Verfassung beginnende Siegeszug des westlichen Liberalismus die republikanische Sprache nicht verschwand. In ihr liegt die historische Quelle des Kommunitarismus und begründet dessen politische Theorie, die im hohen Maße pädagogisch relevant ist. Communitarianism has so far hardly played a role in the pedagogical debate. Within the realm of the German-speaking countries, this is related to the important thesis postulated by Ferdinand Tönnies, according to which "society" is a form resulting from the decline of "community", thereby decisively impeding the contemporary recourse to the concept of "community". In the present articel, communitarianism is initially conceived as an American phenomenon of the late twentieth century, the roots of which go back to the seventeenth century and, above all, to the era of the foundation of America during the eighteenth century. The reconstruction of these early beginnings reveals a crucial conflict also apparent in the front-line position of two different political languages: that of Republicanism and that of natural law (later, Liberalism). Important is the fact that, despite the triumph of Western Liberalism, starting with the American Constitution, the Republican language did not disappear. In it resides the historical source of communitarianism and the foundation of its political theory, which is of great pedagogical relevance.
