The present contribution scrutinizes Ronald Dworkin's idea of a "religion without god". It suggests that this concept is based on an ontology which is deeply rooted in natural sciences and hence blind for the phenomena of human everyday reality. As a contrast, this essay argues in favour of an understanding of religion that starts from reality as experienced and endured by human beings. The insight that human life takes place in reality spaces inaccessible to scientific objectification is of central relevance for this model. Hence religious belief is not a belief in facts but orientation in certain reality spaces ["Präsenzräume"].
