The author shows that the Protestant and the Catholic Churches of Germany have a clear position regarding the biblical option for the poor. Nevertheless they cannot change social politics directly, characterized in Germany by the so called Hartz IV-laws. This is due to the modern systemic-functional organisation of politics. Public advocacy for the poor, lobby activity in favour of the poor, and frrst help through thousands of soup and church kitchens are the forms of Christian solidarity with the poor. But churches and diaconia must be cautious not to become part of a parallel society for poor people, which ultimately deprives poor people of their right to live humanely and participate fully in cultural life. Thus, the author finally reflects forms of symbolic boycotting of first help-activities, so to demonstrate the need of a radical change of social politics
