Based on Isaiah Berlin's distinction between negative and positive freedom, this article examines the conceptualisation of freedom as well as the discussion of aspects and questions related to the concept of freedom in the past 65 volumes of the "Zeitschrift für Evangelische Ethik". In doing so, it first becomes clear how post-war Protestant ethics specifically did not tie in with the theological or ecclesial discussion of freedom in the first half of the century. The article then traces the Protestant discourse on freedom in the context of West German democracy from its early years through the specific lines of conflict of the Cold War and the years of reunification to the present. For the current debate, challenges posed by the life sciences and sociological theorising are particularly decisive for the understanding of freedom.
