The question of a "masterly" way of leading one's life has a long tradition rooted in the genesis of philosophy and theology. Specific developments in society today add a new and highly explosive force to this question. Concerned with the art of living, the dialogue between theology and philosophy, however, experienced various disturbances and interruptions, which have affected today's pastoral theology rather unfavourably. In addition to pointing at difficult "heritage", this article names resources resulting from die teaching of the Gospel (as regards the content) as well as from the dialogue - still to be opened-between practical philosophy and practical theology (as regards the method). In this context, consequences are developed, particularly referring to the ethical-philosophical dimension of pastoral care and to the life-serving aspect of the sermon.
