Matthew's gospel is characterized by an intensive reflection of the story of Jesus in the light of Scripture. Inspired by the discussion on intertextuality, recent research on Matthew's Gospel has moved beyond the focus on the fulfillment quotations and their text form and has inquired the intertextual dimension of Matthew's gospel more comprehensively. The article discusses some major recent contributions to the field, namely studies on the reception of the book of Zechariah in Matthew's Gospel, on the intertextual dimension of the shepherd motif, and on Matthew's Isaac typology. Furthermore, the article reflects on methodological problems of intertextual readings of Matthew's Gospel such as the question how to control, which semantic import from the original context of a quotation is intended by the author.
