Karl Barth was the central theological figure not only in Germany but also in Korea. Parallel to the three categories of Barth-research in Germany distinguished by Jüngel in his Barth-Studien, the Barth-reception in Korea can be categorized in three tendencies. This research trend, however, should not be considered as being a simple acceptance of the German research standard. Instead, it ought to be understood as the result of a critical dialogue between Barth's theology and the three main original theological positions in Korea. The three versions of Barth-reception, namely, the cultural-liberal reception, the political-socialist one and, finally, the dogmatic one, reflect the theological formations of the three main protestant confessions in Korea. This paper aims to elaborate on the ecclesiastical situation through the report on the history of Barth's reception in Korea.
