The relationship between dogmatic theology and exegesis is full of tensions, but these tensions are meaningful for theology as a whole and should neither be lamented nor covered up. The autonomy of a historic-critically informed exegesis besides dogmatic theology safeguards the latter from docetic tendencies, while dogmatics enforces subject-oriented exegetical studies. Yet one should not counter the present self-isolation of exegesis within theology, which is accompanied by a certain technical jargon, by the postulation of a 'theological exegesis', which would just lead exegesis itself into Docetism; one should rather aim at a subject-oriented intensification of the traditional exegetical endeavor. Exegesis could then prove as an attractive dialogue partner and impulse-giver of dogmatic theology, enriching dogmatic theology substantially by the discussion and evaluation of biblical thought and its dynamics of interpretation.
