Neu Durch Emanzipation zur Transdisziplinarität von der christlichen Archäologie zur spätantiken und frühbyzantinischen Kunstwissenschafrt und Archäologie

Studies and research on Early Christian and Early Byzantine art and archaeology have had a very prosperous time during the last three decades in Germany and elsewhere, specially France, Italy, and Great Britain. The field of late antiquity studies has become more important in the departments of church history at theologic faculties and in the history and art departments. New areas of excavations and study can be found in the whole Mediterranean world and beyond. Besides we meet a refinement of questions and of methods of modern research, even on sites like Rome. The paper emphasizes three aspects of late antique studies on art and archaeology: Late antiquity studies have become an university and research discipline of its own weight. In this discipline late antiquity studies form a fine starting point for trans- disciplinary and multidisciplinary questions being important for university politics. Late antiquity studies show themselves to be more and more important for their interest on development change and continuity of a multicultural world passing from classical antiquity into early medieval time. Late antiquity studies open new ways of cooperation for students from the theological and historical departments regarding the mutual influences of a transforming society and the interrelations of cultural, religious, political, and civic worlds on a high brow level as well as in every day life. This research could also create more sensibility for the hermeneutics of our present day world.
