The article shows, after a short look at "Madame Bovary", how in Flaubert's works "A Simple Heart" and "Bouvard und Pécuchet" church and religion are described. Underline the irony, elements of taking the topics seriously can be detected. A mixture of both may even be a good example for church and theology in their relations to their own traditions.
